Passage 1: Saving Water at Home

Water is essential for life, yet many families use far more water than they really need. In a typical home, water is used for drinking, cooking, washing, cleaning, and watering plants. When water is wasted, families pay higher bills, and local water supplies come under pressure, especially in the dry season. The good news is that saving water at home is not difficult. Small changes in daily habits can make a big difference without reducing comfort or quality of life. Most water in the home is used in the bathroom. A long shower can use more than sixty litres of water, while a bath can use even more. Taking a shorter shower, for example five minutes instead of fifteen, can save a large amount of water every week. Turning off the tap while brushing teeth is another simple step. Many people leave the tap running for two minutes, which wastes several litres each time. Fixing leaking taps and toilets is also important. A tap that drips slowly may seem harmless, but it can waste thousands of litres in a year. Checking pipes regularly helps families find leaks early. In the kitchen, water can be saved by washing vegetables in a bowl rather than under a running tap, and by running the washing machine only when it is full. Washing dishes by hand with a basin also uses less water than leaving the tap on. In the garden, plants should be watered in the early morning or in the evening, when the sun is not strong, so less water evaporates. Using rainwater collected in a tank is a smart choice for watering plants and cleaning outdoor areas. Families can also choose plants that need less water, which is helpful in hot and dry regions. Another useful habit is to check how much water the family uses each month. When people look at the water bill together, they can see which months use more water and talk about why. For example, water use may rise in summer because gardens need more watering and children take more showers. By comparing bills, families can set a simple goal, such as using ten percent less water next month. Some modern taps and showerheads also use less water while still giving a strong flow, so replacing old equipment can save water every day without any extra effort. These small investments often pay for themselves through lower bills. Saving water is not only about money. It is also about responsibility to the community and the environment. When every family uses water carefully, rivers, lakes, and underground water sources are protected for the future. Children can learn good habits from their parents, such as turning off taps and reporting leaks. Schools can support this by teaching students why water matters and how to use it wisely. In conclusion, saving water at home is easy, practical, and necessary. With attention, planning, and cooperation, every household can protect this precious resource while still enjoying a comfortable modern life.

Passage 2: Cashless Payments Change Daily Life in Vietnam

In recent years, paying without cash has become common in Vietnam. Many people now use bank cards, mobile banking apps, and QR codes to pay for food, transport, clothes, and bills. A customer in a small cafe can scan a code with a phone and finish payment in seconds, without counting notes or waiting for change. This change has been supported by cheaper smartphones, better internet, and banks that offer easy mobile services. For many young people, carrying a wallet full of cash now feels old-fashioned. Cashless payment brings clear benefits. It is fast and convenient, especially when buying small items or paying online. It also helps people keep track of spending because every payment is recorded in an app. Shop owners benefit too: they do not need to keep large amounts of cash, and they can serve customers more quickly. In addition, cashless payment can reduce the risk of losing money or receiving fake notes. For the economy, electronic payments make transactions clearer and safer, which supports honest business and modern services. However, cashless payment is not perfect. Some older people find it difficult to use apps, remember passwords, or trust a phone with their money. Small sellers in markets or rural areas may not have a stable internet connection or a bank account. There are also security risks: if a phone is lost or a password is stolen, money can be taken quickly. Fraud messages that pretend to be from a bank are another danger. Users must therefore be careful, use strong passwords, and never share personal codes with strangers. Cashless payment also changes how people manage their daily budgets. Because every transaction appears in a banking app, users can check at the end of the week how much they spent on food, transport, or entertainment. This clear record can help students and young workers avoid overspending and plan for important goals, such as saving for a course or a holiday. Some apps even send a message when spending is higher than usual, which reminds users to be careful. However, this convenience can also make spending feel too easy, so people still need self-control. A simple rule is to set a weekly limit and check the balance before buying something unnecessary. Despite these challenges, cashless payment is likely to keep growing. The government, banks, and technology companies are working to make systems safer and easier for everyone. Training programmes for older users, better internet in rural areas, and stronger protection against fraud will help more people join this change. In the future, cash may still be used for some situations, but it will probably play a smaller role. Young people in cities already pay by phone for almost everything, from coffee to bus tickets, and this habit is spreading to smaller towns every year. For most Vietnamese people, the combination of convenience, safety, and modern technology makes cashless payment an important part of daily life today.

Passage 3: Water Puppetry — Vietnam's Unique Art

Water puppetry is one of Vietnam's most special traditional arts. It began hundreds of years ago in villages in the Red River Delta, where farmers performed on flooded rice fields after harvest. Today, artists perform in a pool of water, standing behind a bamboo screen, while wooden puppets move on the water surface. To the audience, the puppets seem to move by magic, but in fact skilled puppeteers control them with long rods hidden under the water. This combination of skill, humour, and surprise has delighted Vietnamese audiences for generations. The puppets are made from light wood, painted in bright colours, and covered with lacquer to protect them from water. Each puppet represents a character from daily life, history, or legend, such as a farmer, a fisherman, a dragon, or a fairy. The stories are often funny and easy to understand. They show farmers planting rice, children catching fish, or dragons dancing at a festival. Traditional music, drums, and singing accompany every show, creating a lively atmosphere. A singer often explains the story while the puppets act it out on the water. Water puppetry is also an important way to preserve Vietnamese culture. The stories teach values such as hard work, kindness, and respect for nature. For visitors from other countries, a water puppet show is a wonderful introduction to Vietnamese village life and imagination. Many tourists in Hanoi visit the famous Thang Long theatre to watch a show. For Vietnamese children, puppetry connects them with the past and helps them feel proud of their heritage. Schools sometimes organise trips to puppet shows so students can learn about tradition in a joyful way. A typical show lasts about forty-five minutes and includes several short scenes. The audience first sees farmers working in the fields, then watches animals, fairies, and dragons appear in turn. The puppeteers must work together perfectly, because each puppet is controlled by more than one person and the timing of music, movement, and story is very important. Even a small mistake can be seen by the audience, so performers practise for many years before they appear on stage. Backstage, the water is kept warm and clean, and the puppets are dried carefully after every performance to protect their paint and lacquer. This careful preparation shows the deep respect artists have for their tradition. However, this art faces challenges today. Young people have many forms of entertainment, such as films and video games, so fewer young artists choose to learn puppetry. Training takes years, and puppeteers must practise in water for long hours. To keep the art alive, theatres are creating new stories, improving stages, and performing abroad. Many visitors say the show is the most memorable part of their trip to Hanoi, because it combines music, colour, and humour in a way that needs no translation. If artists, audiences, and the government work together, water puppetry can continue to charm people in Vietnam and around the world for many years to come.

Passage 4: Working from Home: Freedom and New Challenges

Working from home has become a normal choice for many people since the growth of the internet and, more recently, the changes caused by the pandemic. Instead of travelling to an office every day, employees can work from a room at home, a cafe, or even another city. This freedom attracts many workers, especially parents who want more time with their children and young professionals who dislike long commutes. Companies also see benefits: they can save money on office space and hire staff from different regions. One clear advantage is flexibility. Workers can often choose when to start and finish, as long as they complete their tasks on time. They save time and money on transport, and they can create a comfortable workspace. Many people say they concentrate better at home because offices can be noisy. In addition, working from home can reduce traffic and pollution in big cities, because fewer people travel during rush hours. For some, this new way of working improves the balance between work and family life. However, working from home also brings new challenges. Some workers feel lonely because they miss chatting with colleagues and sharing ideas face to face. Others find it hard to concentrate when children, television, or household chores distract them. Without clear working hours, some people work too much and feel tired or stressed. Managers also worry about teamwork and trust: it is harder to check progress and support staff from a distance. Success at home therefore depends on self-discipline, good communication, and a clear routine. A good home workspace is also very important. Workers need a quiet corner with a comfortable chair, good light, and a reliable internet connection. When work and rest share the same room, it is easy to feel tired or distracted, so many experts advise workers to keep regular hours and take short breaks away from the screen. A short walk, a glass of water, or a few minutes of stretching can help people stay fresh and focused. Families can help too by respecting working hours and keeping noise low during important calls. With a clear workspace and a sensible routine, home working becomes much more comfortable and productive for most people. In the future, many experts predict a mix of home and office work, called hybrid working. Employees may work at home two or three days a week and go to the office for meetings and teamwork. This model tries to keep the freedom of home working while keeping the social and creative benefits of the office. To make it work, companies need clear rules, good technology, and regular contact between managers and staff. Some companies also offer online training to help staff manage time, use new software, and stay connected with their team from home. Working from home is not perfect for everyone, but with balance and planning, it can be a practical and modern way to work in Vietnam and around the world.

Task 2 — Essay (2/3 điểm) · Viết luận khoảng 250 từ

Đề bài / Topic: Some people think students should wear school uniforms. Others think students should wear their own clothes. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Dàn ý / Outline: Mở bài: nêu 2 quan điểm; Thân bài 1: ủng hộ đồng phục (bình đẳng, tinh thần trường học, tiết kiệm); Thân bài 2: phản đối (tự do, cá tính, thoải mái); Kết bài: ý kiến cá nhân — ủng hộ đồng phục.

Bài mẫu band B1 / Sample answer:

Many people have different opinions about school uniforms. Some people think students should wear uniforms, while others believe students should wear their own clothes. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion. On the one hand, supporters of uniforms argue that uniforms create equality. When all students wear the same clothes, no one feels poor or different because of fashion. Uniforms also help students feel part of their school and make it easier for teachers to recognise them. Moreover, parents can save time and money because they do not need to buy many fashionable clothes. Uniforms also reduce arguments in the morning, because students do not need to choose what to wear every day. On the other hand, opponents argue that students should have freedom to choose their clothes. They believe personal clothes help young people express their personality and develop their own style. Wearing their own clothes can also make students feel more comfortable and confident at school. In my opinion, wearing uniforms is better. Although freedom is important, equality, discipline, and school spirit are more important for learning. Furthermore, when students wear uniforms, schools can focus more on learning than on fashion, and teachers can build a stronger sense of community among students from different backgrounds. Students can express themselves in other ways, such as through art, sport, and ideas. In conclusion, schools should keep uniforms because they create a fair and focused learning environment for everyone. For these reasons, I believe uniforms should remain an important part of school life in the future.

  1. Where is your hometown?
  2. What do you like most about your hometown?
  3. What is your daily routine on weekdays?
  4. What do you usually do in the evening?
  5. Do you prefer mornings or evenings? Why?
  6. What do you do on weekends?

Câu trả lời mẫu band B1:

My hometown is Tra Vinh, a peaceful city in the south of Vietnam. I like it because people are friendly and the food is delicious. On weekdays, I usually get up at six, go to school or work, and study English in the evening. In the evening, I often read books or chat with friends. I prefer evenings because I can relax after a busy day. On weekends, I visit my family and practise English with my club.

Part 2 — Situation: Your friend spends too much time on the phone

Choose one solution, defend it, and argue against the others.

I think joining a sports club is the best solution. First, sport keeps my friend active and healthy. Second, playing with others helps him make friends and spend less time alone with his phone. Setting a screen limit is useful, but it is hard to follow alone. A new hobby is also good, but sport is better because it improves both health and social life.

Part 3 — Topic: Learning English + Mind map

Mind map gợi ý: Vocabulary · Speaking practice · Listening · Reading

  1. How can students improve their speaking?
  2. Is it better to learn English alone or with friends? Why?
  3. What role does technology play in learning English?

Câu trả lời mẫu band B1:

Learning English is important because it helps us study, work, and travel. To improve, students should learn new words every day, practise speaking with friends, listen to songs and films, and read short stories. In my opinion, learning with friends is better because we can correct each other and stay motivated. Technology also helps a lot: apps and online videos make learning fun and flexible. The most important thing is regular practice, not perfect grammar.
